African Union Day: On this very special African Union day, 9 September 2009, which marks the 10th anniversary of the African Union, we gathered to celebrate a special day of Women in Science and Technology. Organized by AU’s Science and Technology and Human Resources Commission (STHR). S&T is one o the key focal area on Africa’s development Agenda, thus in the African Ministerial Conference on S&T (AMCOST) in 2006/2007 made clear & special call to promote the greater participation of women in S&T. Therefore, AU awarded 5 special women scientist, who have remarkable achievements in their sphere of expertise.
AU Commissioner of Science & Technology called for all countries to put forward a percent of their GNP to Science & Technology. He said "If research is to make sense, it should involve every section of society including women. Africa cannot leave this intelligence & dynamism behind."

Present was the EU Commissioner J. Potocnik showing his a firm commitment to Africa through its Joint AU/Africa Research program and “Book of Projects”. The Commissioner spoke of transforming the spirit of donorship to partnership and that partners require not just signing agreements and declarations, but commitment. He reinforced the partnership as “not only our commitment, but our deepest human dignity”.
